Sayan Basu, MBBS, MS, LV Prasad Eye Institute Hyderabad, India & University of Rochester, USA
Dr Sayan Basu is the Prof D Balasubramanian Chair of Eye Research and serves as the Director of both the Prof Brien Holden Eye Research Centre (BHERC) and the Centre for Ocular Regeneration (CORE). He is also an Adjunct Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Rochester, NY, USA.
As a clinician-scientist and a key opinion leader in corneal and ocular surface disorders, he has significantly contributed to advancements in regenerative medicine and translational research. Clinically, he specializes in high-risk corneal and ocular surface cases, including those with prior surgical failures or complications. His research focuses on scarless corneal wound healing through innovations in stem cells, biomaterials, and 3D bioprinting. His clinical and research efforts are driven by the singular goal of helping all patients achieve their full visual potential, regardless of disease complexity.
Virender Singh Sangwan, MBBS, MS, Dr. Shroff Charity Eye Hospital, India
Dr Virender Sangwan, MS, is the Director of Innovations and Translational Research at the Dr Shroff Charity Eye Hospital (SCEH), Delhi. He trained with Professor C Stephen Foster in ocular immunology at the Harvard Medical School, Boston, and the Cornea-Anterior Segment with Professor G N Rao at the LV Prasad Eye Institute in Hyderabad, India.
Virender has a distinguished career in ophthalmology and groundbreaking achievements that have significantly advanced science and patient care. His contributions include establishing the Corneal stem cell service in Hyderabad, India, and founding two key organizations, the Uveitis Society of India and the Asia Cornea Society (ACS). He currently is the president of ACS. In addition, he was the President of the Uvea Society of India (2010-2013) and the Associate Editor of the Indian Journal of Ophthalmology (2000-2006).
In his professional career spanning thirty-plus years, he has served as staff ophthalmologist and Field Medical Director of ORBIS (1993-1995), ophthalmology faculty and head of the cornea service of the LV Prasad Eye Institute, Hyderabad, India (1998-2018) before his current position in the SCEH. Working with ORBIS International, Virender contributed to developing cornea services at the Islamia Eye Hospital, Dhaka, Bangladesh. He has conducted educational and training programs in several countries in the Asia-Pacific region- Thailand, Myanmar, China, Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Singapore, Japan, Indonesia, Sudan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, in Europe (Russia and Sweden) and Africa (Sudan). In the last five years at SCEH, Virender has established an AMG processing unit, stem cell & liquid cornea laboratories and translational research, including a PhD program.
Virender has pioneered limbal stem cell therapy for chemical corneal injuries. His innovative technique of limbal epithelial transplantation (SLET) as an alternative to cultivated limbal epithelial transplantation (CLET) has had a significant impact on the global ophthalmology community. This simplified the technology and reduced the cost of care, benefiting numerous cornea surgeons worldwide and leading to research in other countries using this technology. Today, the SLET is practiced globally, democratized limbal stem cell transplantation, and it is performed significantly at a reduced cost. He conducts regular workshops to teach the SLET method of treating chemical injuries of the cornea. Virender is leading the development of a bioengineered “Liquid Cornea” with a biotech company in India. Once developed, this technology would reduce the waiting period for corneal tissue and make corneal transplantation available worldwide.
The limbal stem cell innovation has earned Virender the prestigious Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize (awarded to under 45 scientists by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, India 2006) and the National Technology Award (Department of Biotechnology, India 2007). His other academic recognition includes the Senior Achievement Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology (2008). With an h-index of 64, citations of 14,707 (12 December 2024), and 331 indexed publications, Virender is ranked among the top 2% of world ophthalmologists (Stanford University survey, in 2022).
