About the Collection

BMC Nursing is calling for submissions to our Collection, Critical care nursing. Critical care nursing is a specialized field that demands a unique skill set and knowledge base to provide optimal care to patients experiencing life-threatening conditions. Nurses in this field are tasked with managing complex medical technologies, making rapid clinical decisions, and delivering compassionate care in high-pressure environments such as Intensive Care Units (ICUs). This Collection aims to explore the multifaceted roles of critical care nurses and the various challenges they face, including the evolving nature of patient care, interdisciplinary collaboration, and the integration of technology into practice.

Research in critical care nursing is vital as it drives improvements in patient outcomes, safety, and the overall quality of care delivered in acute settings. Recent advancements have included the development of evidence-based protocols, enhanced training programs, and the integration of family-centered care approaches that prioritize the needs of both patients and their families. Additionally, understanding moral distress among critical care nurses has led to discussions about ethical decision-making and support systems within healthcare environments, ultimately fostering a culture of safety and resilience.

As research in critical care nursing progresses, we can anticipate significant advancements in areas such as technology utilization for patient monitoring, innovative models of care delivery, and enhanced educational frameworks that prepare nurses for the challenges of the future. Additionally, there is potential for improved interdisciplinary collaboration and communication strategies that can further elevate patient care standards in critical environments.

We call for studies contributing to the examination of topics relating to critical care nursing, including but not limited to:

  • Family-centered care in critical settings
  • Patient safety and quality improvement
  • Integration of technology in critical care nursing
  • Addressing moral distress among critical care nurses
  • Addressing the unique challenges faced by healthcare professionals in critical care
  • Strategies for fostering a healthy work environment and supporting nurse well-being in high-pressure settings
  • Palliative and end-of-life care practices
  • Balancing patient comfort with the need for life-saving interventions in the ICU
  • Inclusion and diversity within the ICU workforce
  • Sustainability of the ICU environment
