Paolo Martelletti, MD, Unitelma Sapienza University, Italy

Paolo Martelletti is Professor at Unitelma Sapienza University of Rome, Certified Full Professor of Internal Medicine, and Editor-in-Chief of The Journal of Headache and Pain. His research covers headaches, pain, neuroimmunology, rehabilitation, public health, and COVID-19.

He was Associate Professor at Sapienza University (2005–2022) and Director of the Regional Reference Centre (2003–2022), Internal and Emergency Medicine at Sant’Andrea Hospital (2017–2022), and COVID-19 Clinical Area (2021). He leads the Master in Headache Medicine (2003–2022) and Training Course on Headaches for LMICs (2023–2025).

He serves as European Expert for the European Medicine Agency (2016-2025). He is also a Past President of the European Headache Federation (2017-2018) and Founder and Director of School of Advanced Studies of European Headache Federation (15 Editions) (2017-2023). He was a Co-Founder and Chairman of Lifting The Burden (2009-2017) and a Project Team Member of the Atlas of Headache Disorders, Editors WHO (2011). He was awarded Knight Grand Cross, the highest honor of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic (2022)

He also serves as Founding Editor-in-Chief, SN Comprehensive Clinical Medicine (since 2018) and an Editor of Handbook of Headache (2011), Migraine in Medicine (2022), Non-Migraine Primary Headaches in Medicine (2023), and Headache Book Series (2015-2025) (16 Volumes).


About the Collection

The Journal of Headache and Pain is pleased to present our 2025 Early Career Research Mentorship Program. 

Early Career Researchers (PhD/PostDoc or Resident) are eligible for this program. Applications can be made by the submission of an Original Research or Review article (as the corresponding or co-corresponding author), within the scope of The Journal of Headache and Pain, to the thematic series "2025 Early Career Research Mentorship". Applicants should include a declaration of their eligibility in the cover letter alongside their submitted article. 

This program is associated with a total award of 31,900 EUR/39,900 USD/28,900 GBP ( +VAT) in the form of 10 waivers of the journal's Article Processing Charge, divided between 10 early career researchers. The awards will be granted to 10 applicants on a first-come, first-served basis, upon acceptance of their submitted article after peer review. 

All submitted articles will be sent for an initial round of peer-review, regardless of novelty, provided they are in scope and sufficiently sound. Articles will follow the journal's standard peer-review process, with the series edited and overseen by the Editor-in-Chief. All accepted articles will be published together in the thematic series "2025 Early Career Research Mentorship". 

Applicants will also be considered for a position on The Journal of Headache and Pain Junior Editorial Board. Current members of the Junior Editorial Board are also welcome to submit their work for consideration. The program will close to submissions October 31st 2025, or once the total award has been allocated.

This Collection welcomes submission of original research and review articles. Should you wish to submit a different article type, please read our submission guidelines to confirm that type is accepted by the journal. 

Articles for this Collection should be submitted via our submission system, Snapp. Please, select the appropriate Collection title “2025 Early Career Research Mentorship Program" under the “Details” tab during the submission stage.

Articles will undergo the journal’s standard peer-review process and are subject to all the journal’s standard policies. Articles will be added to the Collection as they are published.

Applicants should include a declaration of their eligibility for this program as an Early Career Researchers (PhD/PostDoc or Resident) in the cover letter alongside their submitted article

The Editors have no competing interests with the submissions which they handle through the peer-review process. The peer-review of any submissions for which the Editors have competing interests is handled by another Editorial Board Member who has no competing interests.
