Dr Murat Akand is an associate professor of urology who recently defended his thesis about non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) at KU Leuven. Specifically, he has worked on quality control indicators in the management of intermediate- and high-risk NMIBC and genomic and transcriptomic profiling of the same patient group. He is also interested in developing novel techniques for renal access in percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL). His clinical interests include bladder and renal cancer and urinary stone disease, especially minimally invasive treatments. He is serving as an editorial board member and reviewer for various renowned urological journals and has authored more than 100 publications in indexed medical journals.

Amr Elsawy, MD, PhD, MSc, Mansoura University, Egypt

Dr Elsawy is a lecturer of urology at the Mansoura Urology and Nephrology Center and the School of Medicine at Mansoura University. Dr Elsawy has made numerous scientific contributions to the field of urology, including presentations at internationally renowned urological conferences. Dr Elsawy’s research interests include identifying novel biomarkers for the screening, diagnosis, and surveillance of genitourinary malignancies. His work has been published in high-ranking peer-reviewed urology platforms. Dr Elsawy has served as a reviewer in many prestigious urology journals. Furthermore, Dr Elsawy is an active member of most international urological societies, including the American Urological Association (AUA), the European Association of Urology (EAU), the Société Internationale d’Urologie (SIU), and the Arab Association of Urology (AAU).

Juan Gómez Rivas, MD, PhD, San Carlos Clinical Hospital, Spain

Prof Juan Gómez Rivas holds a degree in Medicine (2007) and has been a specialist in Urology since 2015. He earned his PhD in Medicine from the Autonomous University of Madrid (UAM) and has undergone extensive specialized training. His academic credentials include an international master’s degree in medical center and hospital management, as well as a master’s degree in comprehensive medical and surgical management of localized, advanced, and metastatic renal and prostate cancer from the University of Salamanca. He combines clinical practice with teaching and research. He serves as an associate professor of Urology at the Complutense University of Madrid and coordinates the master’s program in the multidisciplinary approach to prostate cancer. His expertise extends to clinical observerships at prestigious international institutions, including L'Institut Mutualiste Montsouris and the Uro-Oncology unit at University College London Hospitals, where he has studied robotics, laparoscopy, and focal therapy techniques for prostate cancer. Prof Gómez Rivas is an active member of leading scientific societies, notably the European Association of Urology (EAU), where he contributes to the European School of Urology (ESU) Board. His dedication to advancing medical knowledge is evident in his involvement with the Health Research Institute at San Carlos Clinical Hospital (IdISSC), where he focuses on clinical and translational oncology research. Dr Gómez Rivas has authored and contributed to over 300 scientific publications, special issues, and book chapters, solidifying his impact in the field of urology.

Giuseppe Lucarelli, MD, PhD, University of Bari, Italy

Giuseppe Lucarelli is currently an associate professor of Urology at the Department of precision and regenerative medicine of the University of Bari, Italy. He is a clinician-scientist, a urologist, and a transplant surgeon. His main research interests include urological oncology and kidney transplantation. In particular, his research investigates the biology of prostate and kidney cancer using high-throughput omic technologies to obtain a detailed molecular characterization of cancer and to identify novel biomarkers that enable more accurate prognostic stratification.

Leonardo Oliveira Reis, MD, PhD, MSc, MBA, Pontifical Catholic University of Campinas, Brazil

Leonardo Oliveira Reis is a Professor of urology and uro-oncology at the State University of Campinas (Unicamp) and Pontifical Catholic University of Campinas (PUC-Campinas). He holds the prestigious "Livre docente" title in urology and urologic oncology and has been a Fulbright Visiting Professor at Harvard University and a Postdoctoral Fellow at Johns Hopkins University. He holds an MBA-accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). His extensive experience spans clinical practice, research, and academia, with a strong focus on genitourinary oncology and immuno-oncology. He has authored over 300 scientific articles and 40 books and chapters and serves as an editor for leading urological journals. A recognized leader in his field, he is an executive member of the World Urologic Oncology Federation and has held prominent positions within the Brazilian Society of Urology. As the director of "UROSCIENCE" and an advisor to national and international scientific organizations, he actively contributes to groundbreaking research and innovation.

About the Collection

BMC Urology is calling for submissions to our Collection on Emerging role of biomarkers in urological conditions.

The landscape of urology is evolving rapidly with the identification and validation of biomarkers that play a crucial role in understanding various urological conditions. Biomarkers can be defined as biological indicators that provide insights into disease processes, enabling clinicians to make informed decisions about diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring. As research progresses, an increasing number of biomarkers are being recognized for their potential application in urological disorders such as prostate cancer, bladder cancer, and kidney disease. This Collection aims to highlight recent findings and innovations in the field, with a particular focus on biomarkers that enhance clinical practice.

The significance of this research is underscored by its potential to transform patient care in urology. Advances in biomarker discovery have led to improved early detection, more accurate diagnoses, and better treatment response assessments. These advancements have the potential to improve patient outcomes and personalize treatment strategies, making them more effective and reducing adverse effects. As we deepen our understanding of the biological underpinnings of urological conditions, we can pave the way for novel therapeutic approaches and enhance the overall management of these diseases.

Continuing research in biomarkers could lead to groundbreaking discoveries that refine diagnostic and therapeutic paradigms in urology. Future developments may include integrating multi-omics approaches, enabling a more comprehensive understanding of disease mechanisms, and facilitating the identification of new therapeutic targets. Such advancements promise to improve prognosis and provide tailored treatment options, ultimately enhancing patient quality of life.

We invite submissions on a range of topics that include but are not limited to:

  • Novel biomarkers for early detection in urology
  • Clinical applications of biomarkers in urological diagnosis
  • Biomarkers and treatment response in urological conditions
  • Integrating biomarkers into clinical practice for urology
