BMC Global and Public Health is calling for submissions to our Collection on geographic challenges to equitable healthcare. This Collection seeks to explore the intricate interplay between geography, geopolitics, topography, and the provision of healthcare services, with a particular emphasis on fostering equity, equality, and justice in healthcare delivery. We invite researchers, scholars, and practitioners from diverse disciplines to contribute their insights, empirical studies, theoretical frameworks, and innovative interventions addressing the multifaceted dimensions of this critical issue.

Jonathan Olsen, BA, MSc, PhD, University of Glasgow, UK

Jonathan Olsen is a Senior Research Fellow at the School of Health and Wellbeing, University of Glasgow. He leads the Mobility in the Urban Environment workstream within the Places and Health Programme at the MRC/CSO Social and Public Health Sciences Unit (SPHSU). As a Health Geographer with training in Geography, Public Health, and Epidemiology, Jon’s research interests are in Spatial Epidemiology and Population Health. Jonathan is a Co-investigator for the NIHR Global Health Research Unit on Social and Environmental Determinants of Health Inequalities (2022-2027).

Julia Moreira Pescarini, PhD, London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, UK and Centre for Data and Knowledge Integration for Health, Oswaldo Cruz Foundation, Brazil

Julia’s research measures how persistent and new global health challenges, such as poverty, vulnerability, deprived living conditions, and climate and environmental factors, including in the broad context of the social determinants of health, affect the chances of people becoming ill and how social policies can mitigate that. She is especially interested in gender, racial, and migrant health inequalities. She has extensive experience working with social determination of health and health inequalities and impact evaluation of social policies on health inequalities using large administrative datasets.

This Collection seeks to explore the intricate interplay between geography, geopolitics, topography, and the provision of healthcare services, with a particular emphasis on fostering equity, equality, and justice in healthcare delivery. We invite researchers, scholars, and practitioners from diverse disciplines to contribute their insights, empirical studies, theoretical frameworks, and innovative interventions addressing the multifaceted dimensions of this critical issue.

Topics of interest include but are not limited to:

  • Geospatial analysis of healthcare accessibility and distribution
  • The impact of geopolitical factors on healthcare disparities
  • Topographical barriers and their implications for healthcare delivery
  • Strategies for promoting equitable access to healthcare in geographically challenging regions
  • Intersectionality of geographic and socioeconomic determinants of health

By bringing together a comprehensive range of perspectives, this Collection aims to advance our understanding of how geographic factors shape healthcare disparities and to identify actionable solutions for achieving health equity on a global scale. Through rigorous research and evidence-based interventions, we aspire to contribute to the realization of Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being and SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities.
