Fabio Perrotta, PhD, MD, University of Campania "Luigi Vanvitelli", Italy

I am an Associate Professor of Respiratory Diseases at the Department of Translational Medical Sciences, University of Campania “L. Vanvitelli” in Naples, Italy. I also work as a Respiratory Consultant at Monaldi Hospital, Naples, where I lead the Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD) clinic in close collaboration with rheumatologists, radiologists, and pathologists. Since 2018, I have been actively involved in research, focusing on clinical, biochemical, and imaging biomarkers in interstitial lung diseases, as well as the interconnection between proliferative neoplastic disorders and ILDs. I am an active member of the European Respiratory Society (ERS) and the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC). Additionally, I serve as Secretary of the Study Group for Thoracic Oncology within the Italian Respiratory Society (SIP/IRS).

Ricardo G. Figueiredo, PhD, Universidade Estadual de Feira de Santana, Brazil

Dr. Ricardo Figueiredo is an Assistant Professor of Respiratory Medicine at the Universidade Estadual de Feira de Santana (UEFS) and serves as the Chief of the Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD) Reference Center at the same institution. He holds a Master’s degree and a Ph.D. in Public Health from UEFS, along with an MBA in Health Management from the Fundação Getúlio Vargas (FGV). He is an ATS Fellow. Since 2023, Dr. Figueiredo has been a faculty member (Teaching Assistant) of the Methods in Epidemiologic, Clinical, and Operations Research (MECOR) Program of the American Thoracic Society (ATS), contributing to the training of health professionals in epidemiology and clinical research. He is also a board member of the Scientific Asthma Committee of the Brazilian Society of Pulmonology and Phthisiology (SBPT) and a member of the Technical Council of Pulmonology and Thoracic Surgery at the Federal Medical Council (CFM).
Dr. Figueiredo is an Associated Researcher at the ProAr Foundation and Instituto Propulmão. His research focuses on severe asthma, pharmacogenetics of asthma, frailty, and interstitial lung diseases (ILDs), as well as venom-induced lung injury.

About the Collection

Systemic autoimmune disorders frequently involve the lungs, presenting significant challenges in both diagnosis and management. This special edition of Respiratory Research aims to explore the latest advancements in understanding, diagnosing, and treating pulmonary manifestations of autoimmune diseases, highlighting emerging research that bridges immunology, pulmonology, and rheumatology.

The collection will address the evolving landscape of diagnostic techniques, including imaging, pulmonary function testing, and molecular biomarkers for early detection and disease monitoring. Contributions focusing on novel therapeutic strategies—such as biologics, immunomodulatory agents, and precision medicine approaches—are particularly encouraged. Additionally, we seek insights into the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying lung involvement and interstitial lung diseases in conditions such as systemic sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and vasculitis, among others.

We welcome original research, systematic reviews, review papers and expert perspectives on topics including:

  • Early detection and risk stratification of autoimmune-related lung disease
  • Innovations in imaging and functional assessment
  • The role of autoantibodies and biomarkers in disease progression and treatment response
  • Personalized approaches to immunosuppressive and biologic therapies
  • Pulmonary complications of novel rheumatologic treatments
  • Multidisciplinary management
  • Artificial intelligence in patient-centered care

By bringing together cutting-edge research, this special edition aims to foster a deeper understanding of autoimmune-related lung disease and inform future diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. We invite researchers and clinicians to contribute to this dynamic and rapidly evolving field.
