BMC Pulmonary Medicine called for submissions to our Collection on Sex and gender in pulmonary disease. The incidence, susceptibility, presentation, diagnosis, treatment outcomes, and severity of numerous pulmonary diseases are significantly influenced by sex and gender. Such diseases can include chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma, lung cancer, interstitial lung disease, and obstructive sleep apnea.

Mari Ozaki, PhD, The Royal College of Surgeons, Ireland

Dr Mari Ozaki is a Research Fellow and lead principal investigator in the Department of Medicine at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. After completing her PhD, she worked as a postdoctoral researcher, working on lung stem cells, alveolar cells, aging, diet, pulmonary fibrosis and COPD. Mari has since broadened her research focus to examine the pathogenesis of genetic lung disease using patient-derived iPSC models, with a specific interest in telomere biology and sex hormones and how they play a role in pulmonary fibrosis, in addition to identifying novel targets for personalized treatments.

Pasquale Tondo, MD, Department of Medical and Surgical Sciences, University of Foggia, Foggia, Italy

Dr Pasquale Tondo is a respiratory physician and researcher in Respiratory Medicine at the University of Foggia. In recent years his research has been focused on different respiratory diseases, and especially on sleep-disordered breathing without ever neglecting a fundamental aspect of the diagnosis, management and outcome of respiratory patients, which is the research of sex and gender differences. Driven by this purpose, he is part of the Italian Respiratory Society (SIP/IRS) Task Force on Gender Medicine, which is investigating how sex and gender differences act and behave as effect modifiers in thoracic physiology and pathophysiology.

About the Collection

BMC Pulmonary Medicine called for submissions to our Collection on Sex and gender in pulmonary disease. Sex and gender play a role in the incidence, susceptibility, presentation, diagnosis, treatment outcomes and severity of many pulmonary diseases, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma, lung cancer, interstitial lung disease, and obstructive sleep apnea. 

To gather research to improve equity in pulmonary medicine and support SDG 3: Good Health & Wellbeing, BMC Pulmonary Medicine welcomes submissions to a new article Collection on “Sex and Gender in Pulmonary Health and Disease.”
