Call for papers - Sleep medicine: from infancy to adolescence

BMC Pediatrics invites submissions to our new Collection, Sleep medicine: from infancy to adolescence. This Collection aims to delve deeply into the realm of sleep disorders and sleep medicine, shedding light on critical issues such as insomnia, sleep apnea, parasomnia, and other sleep-related disturbances that affect infants, children, and adolescents.

We seek advances in research that explores the prevalence, diagnosis, and treatment of sleep disorders from infancy through adolescence. This Collection is particularly interested in studies that investigate the biological, psychological, and environmental factors contributing to sleep disorders, as well as their short- and long-term impacts on physical health, mental health, cognitive development, and overall quality of life.

Angelika Anita Schlarb, PhD,  Bielefeld University, Germany

Prof Angelika Anita Schlarb is currently Professor of Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy of Childhood and Adolescence at Bielefeld University. Prior to this, she was Head of the University Outpatient Clinic for Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy (HAKIJU) and Head of postgraduate training in child and adolescent psychotherapy (BiKiP). 
Prof Schlarb is a member of several groups including the German Sleep Research Society, in which she is co-leader of the pediatric section, the European Sleep Research Society, the European Insomnia Network, and the European Academy of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia Disorder. Her research topics are sleep over the life span, especially children, adolescents, and parents. Prof Schlarb has published several treatment manuals for insomnia and nightmares in young children, school-children, and adolescents.

Karen Spruyt, PhD, HDR, National Institute of Medicine and Health (INSERM), France

Prof Karen Spruyt is affiliated with INSERM and the University of Paris – Robert Debré Academic Hospital in France, where her research investigates the impact of sleep on children's development.
A leading advocate for the critical role of sleep in child development, she drives clinical, research, and public health initiatives to underscore its importance. As the EU representative on the Governing Council of the World Sleep Society, she mentors the first pediatric sleep program accredited by the World Sleep Society within the International Sleep Research Training Program. Prof Spruyt also established the Pediatric Sleep School within the European Sleep Research Society and serves on the executive board of the International Pediatric Sleep Society. Through her leadership and collaborative efforts, she is advancing the field of pediatric sleep research and shaping the next generation of sleep experts.

Guanghai Wang, PhD, Shanghai Children's Medical Center, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, China

Prof Guanghai Wang is a Clinical Psychologist, Sleep Specialist, and Professor at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. His research interests involve sleep and social-emotional development in typically developing children and children with neurodevelopment disorders, as well as associated bio-psycho-social factors and underlying neurocognitive mechanisms.
Prof Wang has published more than 60 peer-reviewed empirical research articles in high-impact journals including Lancet, Jama Network Open, and Sleep. He is an active board member and secretary of the Pediatric Sleep Medicine Committee, a member of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, a committee member of the IPSA, and a member of the editorial board of Behavioral Sleep Medicine.

We seek advances in research that explores the prevalence, diagnosis, and treatment of sleep disorders from infancy through adolescence.   • Prevalence and impact of sleep-related disturbances in different pediatric age groups
  • Diagnostic advances in pediatric sleep disorders
  • Novel interventions and behavioral therapy for sleep disorders in youth 
  • Pharmacological treatments for pediatric sleep disorders
  • Risk factors, including genetic and environmental factors, affecting pediatric sleep quality
  • Public health strategies for preventing sleep disturbances


By compiling a diverse array of studies, this Collection aims to provide a comprehensive resource for clinicians, researchers, and public health professionals dedicated to improving sleep health in infants, children, and adolescents. This Collection supports and amplifies research related to SDG 3: Good Health & Well-Being.
