Megan E. Roberts, PhD, The Ohio State University, USA

Dr Megan E. Roberts is an Associate Professor in the College of Public Health at The Ohio State University in the Division of Health Behavior and Health Promotion. Dr Roberts' research focuses on tobacco use among populations historically targeted by the tobacco industry, including adolescents and young adults, racially and ethnically minoritized individuals, and individuals living in rural areas. A social scientist, her expertise lies in monitoring and prevention, including policy-based prevention.

Katelyn Romm, PhD, University of Oklahoma Health Sciences, USA

Dr Katelyn Romm is an Assistant Professor in the TSET Health Promotion Research Center and the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences. As a life-span developmental psychologist, Dr Romm's research program uses longitudinal, observational research methods to identify sociocontextual determinants of substance use trajectories from adolescence through adulthood. Her currently funded research projects focus on: 1) identifying multilevel drivers of young adult tobacco use trajectories at the intersection of sexual identity and rurality; and 2) understanding social influences of parental acceptance of and behaviors toward their adolescent and young adult children in ways that promote or mitigate tobacco use. Dr Romm aims to inform both policy efforts and public health interventions that are developmentally appropriate and culturally tailored.

About the Collection

BMC Public Health is calling for submissions to our Collection on Electronic cigarettes: emerging trends.

The rise of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) has transformed the landscape of tobacco consumption, particularly among younger populations. As vaping continues to gain popularity, it is essential to explore the implications of this trend on public health. This Collection aims to investigate the diverse factors that influence e-cigarette use, including marketing strategies, flavor preferences, and the demographic characteristics of those who use, among other factors.

Understanding the health risks associated with e-cigarette use is critical to inform the development of effective public health prevention and intervention efforts. Recent studies have highlighted potential long-term effects of vaping, including respiratory issues and cardiovascular risks, as well as the addictive nature of nicotine in flavored e-cigarettes. Advances in research have also begun to shed light on the diverse patterns of e-cigarette use among adolescents, revealing concerning trends that necessitate further investigation. Furthering this knowledgebase is essential for informing regulatory frameworks and educating the public about the risks of vaping.

Topics for submission:

  • Health risks of e-cigarettes
  • E-cigarette use among adolescents
  • Long-term effects of vaping
  • Flavored e-cigarettes and consumer preferences
  • E-cigarette marketing strategies
  • Impact of e-cigarette policy and regulations on usage patterns
  • Comparative analysis of e-cigarette use across different demographics
  • Effectiveness of public health campaigns on e-cigarette awareness and prevention
