Submission Status: Open   |   Submission Deadline: 31 January 2026

BMC Infectious Diseases invites submissions for a Collection on Oral health and infectious diseases: causes, risks, and prevention.

This Collection aims to explore the complex relationships between oral health and infectious diseases, focusing on causes, risks, and prevention strategies. We invite submissions that investigate the oral-systemic link, the impact of oral pathogens on systemic health, and innovative approaches to enhance oral hygiene and prevent oral diseases. The collection aims to bridge gaps in knowledge and promote integrated healthcare solutions that prioritize oral health as a vital component of wellness.

New Content ItemThis Collection supports and amplifies research related to SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being.

Biao Ren, PhD, State Key Laboratory of Oral Diseases, West China School of Stomatology, Sichuan University, China

Dr Biao Ren has received his PhD degree from Institute of Microbiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and is a full-time scientific researcher in State Key Laboratory of Oral Diseases. Dr Ren’s research focuses on the pathogenesis of Candida albicans infections. This work includes how C. albicans penetrate host mucosal barriers, comprised by mucus, local bacteria, host epithelial cells and immune system, then identify potent antifungal agents targeting its pathogenic actions. His group has deciphered several critical pathways for C. albicans pathogenesis, characterized polymicrobial synergism or antagonism between fungal pathogens and bacterial communities, and confirmed several Chinese Traditional Medicine/probiotics for antifungal therapeutic benefits.

About the Collection

BMC Infectious Diseases invites submissions for a Collection on Oral health and infectious diseases: causes, risks, and prevention.

The interplay between oral health and infectious diseases represents a critical area of investigation in contemporary biomedical research. Oral health is not merely a localized issue; it is increasingly recognized as a key contributor to systemic health outcomes. Conditions such as periodontal disease and dental infections can serve as reservoirs for oral pathogens, which may enter the bloodstream and exacerbate or contribute to systemic diseases. Understanding the complex dynamics of the oral microbiome and its role in health and disease is essential for developing effective preventive strategies and interventions.

Advancements in our understanding of the oral-systemic link have illuminated the potential implications of oral health on overall health. Recent studies have linked poor oral hygiene to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and respiratory infections, highlighting the importance of preventive oral health practices. Moreover, innovative research is underway to explore the role of oral microbiota in modulating immune responses and its implications for infectious disease susceptibility. These developments underscore the need for integrated healthcare approaches that prioritize oral health as a fundamental component of overall well-being.

If this research continues to advance, we may witness the emergence of novel therapeutic strategies that target oral pathogens, enhancing our ability to prevent systemic infections linked to oral diseases. Future investigations could lead to breakthroughs in personalized oral health interventions and improved educational campaigns that promote oral hygiene as a fundamental aspect of disease prevention.

  • Oral microbiome and systemic infections
  • Periodontal disease as a risk factor
  • Oral hygiene practices in disease prevention
  • The role of oral pathogens in infectious diseases
  • Innovations in oral health interventions
