Submission Status: Open   |   Submission Deadline: 19 August 2025

BMC Anesthesiology is now inviting submissions to our Collection, Recent advances in adult cardiac anesthesia. This Collection invites researchers to contribute to the growing body of knowledge in adult cardiac anesthesia, focusing on recent scientific and clinical advances and their implications for patient care. We welcome submissions that explore innovative techniques, pharmacological interventions, and strategies for improving perioperative outcomes in cardiac surgery. By sharing insights and findings, we aim to enhance the understanding and practice of cardiac anesthesiology.

Gabor Erdoes, MD, PhD, DESA, EDIC, FASE, FESC, FCCP, Inselspital, University Hospital Bern, Switzerland

Dr Gabor Erdoes is an associate professor of anesthesiology, with a specialized focus in cardiovascular anesthesiology. He began his academic journey by earning a medical degree from Humboldt University, Germany, followed by a PhD from Semmelweis University, Hungary. Over the years, he has gained extensive experience at several leading institutions across Europe, including University Hospital Mainz, University Heart Center Leipzig, the Medical University of Vienna, and Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust in London.

Clinically, Dr Erdoes is dedicated to delivering the highest quality of care to patients, particularly those with complex cardiovascular conditions. In his role as the Head of the Cardiovascular Anesthesia team at University Hospital Bern, he focuses on key areas such as patient blood management, enhanced recovery after surgery, and ensuring patient safety and satisfaction.

In addition to his clinical work, he is actively engaged in advancing the field of anesthesiology. Currently he serves as President of the Swiss Association of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Anaesthesia (SACTA) and as Chair of the Guideline Committee for the European Association of Cardiothoracic Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care (EACTAIC). As Director of the EACTAIC Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesia Fellowship Program at University Hospital Bern, he is dedicated to mentoring the next generation of anesthesiologists, helping them develop into proficient and compassionate practitioners.

Nandor Marczin, MD, PhD Imperial College London, UK

Dr Nandor Marczin is clinical senior lecturer at Imperial College London and honorary consultant in adult cardiothoracic anesthesia at the Royal Brompton and Harefield NHS Hospitals. He completed his residency at Pecs Medical University in Hungary, was junior faculty member at the Medical College of Georgia, USA, and a fellow at Harefield Hospital and Imperial College London, UK.

Dr Marczin was the recipient of the Medical Research Council Clinician Scientists Fellowship. He has 20 years of experience as a consultant in one of the busiest cardiothoracic specialist centers at Harefield Hospital, practicing the full spectrum of cardiothoracic surgery with major clinical interests in transplantation, mechanical support and ex vivo heart and lung perfusion. Dr Marczin’s research focuses on basic mechanisms of perioperative inflammation and metabolic derangements with a strong emphasis on real time molecular diagnostics at the bedside and novel therapies.

Dr Marczin is the immediate past chair of the Transplant and VAD subcommittee and a member of the Thoracic subcommittee of the European Association of Cardiothoracic Anaesthetists. He chaired the recent consensus on Anaesthesia and Intensive Care management of Lung Transplantation, and is scientific coordinator of EACTA Thoracic anaesthesia consensus development (TOSSCA). He was the chair of the ESAIC Cardiothoracic and Vascular Scientific Subcommittee and currently leads the Heart subforum in the Scientific Committee of ESAIC.

About the Collection

BMC Anesthesiology is now inviting submissions for our Collection, Recent advances in adult cardiac anesthesia.  Modern cardiac anesthesia has experienced remarkable progress, with significant new developments towards patient safety, perioperative management, and insight into mechanisms of postoperative complications in cardiac surgery. Key advancements include enhanced hemodynamic and cerebral monitoring, the implementation of enhanced recovery programs, and patient blood management strategies. As the global demand for complex cardiac procedures continues to rise, keeping pace with these innovations is essential for optimizing patient care and safety throughout the perioperative process.

Translational and mechanistic investigations have also paved the way towards personalized anesthetic approaches tailored to the genetic and physiological profiles of individual patients, leading to interventions that maximize personalized outcomes. The integration of artificial intelligence and machine learning in hemodynamic monitoring could revolutionize real-time decision-making during cardiac surgery, further advancing patient safety and enhancing recovery. This collection aims to highlight this progress by focusing on new contribution to the scientific and clinical bases of modern clinical practice.

We welcome original research articles in cardiac anesthesia, including but not limited to:

  • Pharmacological interventions
  • Hemodynamic and cerebral monitoring techniques
  • Advances in mechanical circulatory support
  • Enhanced recovery programs, including fast-track strategies
  • Advances in patient blood management
  • Genetic and metabolic phenotyping and translational or mechanistic research

By expanding our collective knowledge through ongoing research and collaboration, we can continue to refine cardiac anesthetic techniques and strategies, ultimately improving outcomes for patients undergoing cardiac surgery.
