Sayeh Bayat, PhD, University of Calgary, Canada

Dr Sayeh Bayat is an Assistant Professor at the University of Calgary, where she holds joint appointments in the Departments of Geomatics Engineering and Biomedical Engineering. Her research program centers on leveraging digital technology, data science, and geographic information science to create data-enabled technological solutions for personalized healthcare. This cross-disciplinary effort, to this date, has resulted in innovative techniques to new insights into the relationship between mobility behaviours and cognitive functions. Her key focus is to explore how a human-centric approach to machine learning can improve the detection, diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment of health issues, including dementia.

Alexandra König, PhD, University Côte d’Azur, France

Dr Alexandra König is a researcher and project manager at INRIA, University Côte d’Azur, France, specialized in digital phenotyping for psychiatric disorders and cognitive assessment in clinical trials. As the Principal Investigator for the EIT health project 'DeepSpA' and co-founder of 'ki-elements,' she pioneered AI-empowered speech analysis for neurological diagnoses. Formerly a Clinical Research Associate at CHU Nice, her roles include contributions to projects tackling sensory disorders and early dementia detection. Dr König’s research interests focus on innovative healthcare solutions, shaping the intersection of technology and patient care.

About the Collection

BMC Digital Health is presenting our Collection, The role of digital health in supporting people with dementia.

Dementia, a growing global healthcare challenge, has a profound impact on the lives of individuals living with this condition and their caregivers. With an aging population and an increasing prevalence of dementia, the need for innovative solutions to enhance the quality of life and support for those affected by dementia is more pressing than ever. Digital health technologies have emerged as powerful tools that can potentially transform dementia care, offering new hope and possibilities.

Interdisciplinary research has already propelled significant strides, such as the development of personalized cognitive training programs, remote monitoring systems for behavioral changes, and the integration of AI for early detection. These innovations not only enhance patient autonomy but also alleviate caregiver burden, offering a glimpse into a future where predictive models could anticipate and manage symptom progression effectively.

This Collection aims to bring together the latest research, innovations, and insights into how digital health technologies can address the unique challenges faced by individuals living with dementia, as well as their caregivers and healthcare providers. We highlight contributions that examine a wide range of topics within the intersection of dementia and digital health, including but not limited to:

  • Digital therapeutics for Alzheimer's
  • Wearable devices in remote dementia monitoring
  • AI-integrated digital health for cognitive support
  • Virtual reality interventions in dementia care
  • Mobile health for daily dementia management
  • Assistive technologies for independent living
  • Telehealth solutions for dementia support
  • Personalized DTx for cognitive enhancement
  • Digital health in socially assistive robotics
  • Virtual healthcare in managing dementia
