BMC Cardiovascular Disorders is calling for submissions to our Collection on Sudden cardiac death (SCD). SCD claims countless lives annually, often striking individuals with little to no warning signs. By unraveling the intricate pathophysiological mechanisms underlying SCD, researchers and clinicians can identify high-risk individuals, implement targeted preventive strategies, and improve patient outcomes. Enhanced understanding of SCD enables the development of more effective diagnostic tools, risk stratification algorithms, and therapeutic interventions. Concerted efforts in comprehending the complexities of SCD are essential in advancing cardiovascular medicine and promoting public health worldwide.

Maciej Dyrbuś, PhD, MD, School of Medical Sciences in Zabrze, Medical University of Silesia, Katowice, Poland

Dr Maciej Dyrbuś is a cardiology resident, working at the 3rd Department of Cardiology, at the Silesian Centre for Heart Diseases in Zabrze, Poland. His work focuses on device therapy, remote patient monitoring, and invasive cardiac procedures. He also presents interests in preclinical science, including the management of cardio-oncology treatment modalities in the presence of cardiac devices. During his academic years, he received a scholarship from the Polish Minister of Health for significant achievements. He holds an MD, having graduated from the Medical University of Silesia in Katowice with the highest grade, and a PhD from the same institution, having defended his thesis on the assessment of peri-mortem findings from cardiac implantable electronic devices in patients with heart failure. He is an Editorial Board Member of BMC Cardiovascular Disorders and European Journal of Medical Research.

Elizabeth Paratz, PhD, MD, St Vincent’s Institute of Medical Research, Australia

Dr Elizabeth Paratz is a cardiologist and World Heart Federation Emerging Leader. She gained her medical degree from the University of Melbourne with honors (2010) and qualified as a cardiologist in 2017. Her PhD, undertaken at the Baker Heart & Diabetes Institute, focused on young cardiac arrest, and received the Paul Korner PhD Medal. She leads state-wide sudden cardiac arrest registries (EndUCD and CODEX) and is part of multiple national and international initiatives to reduce the global burden of sudden cardiac death. She is also Deputy Medical Director of the East Timor Hearts Fund and a Designated Aviation Cardiologist.

About the Collection

BMC Cardiovascular Disorders is calling for submissions to our Collection on Sudden cardiac death. Sudden cardiac death (SCD) represents a critical challenge in cardiovascular medicine, often occurring unexpectedly and without prior symptoms. Understanding the underlying mechanisms, risk factors, and preventive strategies is crucial in combating this life-threatening event.

Contributions to this Collection will provide valuable insights into the multifaceted nature of sudden cardiac death, fostering advancements in risk assessment, prevention, and management strategies. We welcome original research articles, reviews, perspectives, and case studies that contribute to our understanding of this critical cardiovascular phenomenon.
