BMC Emergency Medicine welcomed submissions to our collection, Stroke management. This Collection sought to gather cutting-edge research on stroke management within the context of emergency medicine, encompassing advancements in acute care interventions, telemedicine applications, and multidisciplinary approaches. We invited submissions that explore innovative strategies for optimizing stroke assessment, treatment, and long-term care, with the goal of improving patient outcomes and reducing the global burden of stroke-related disability and mortality.

Jason Philip Appleton, MBChB, MRCP(UK), PhD, Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust and University of Nottingham, UK

Dr Jason Philip Appleton is a consultant stroke neurologist at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust and honorary assistant professor at the University of Nottingham. Dr Appleton completed his PhD during his tenure as a Clinical Research Fellow at the Stroke Trials Unit, University of Nottingham and continues to collaborate on research projects with colleagues regionally, nationally, and internationally.

Jessalyn K Holodinsky, PhD, University of Calgary, Canada

Dr Jessalyn K Holodinsky is an assistant professor in the department of emergency medicine at the University of Calgary, with cross-appointments to the departments of community health sciences and clinical neurosciences. She is a faculty member of the Centre for Health Informatics, the O’Brien Institute for Public Health, the Hotchkiss Brain Institute, and the Alberta Children’s Hospital Research Institute at the University of Calgary, Canada. Dr Holodinsky received her PhD in Epidemiology from the University of Calgary modeling prehospital stroke transport and triage for accessing advanced stroke treatment. Here she also gained expertise in emergency department workflow processes for acute stroke patients. She has trained at centers of excellence around the world including in Calgary (Calgary Stroke Program), Toronto (Sunnybrook Research Institute & ICES), Melbourne (Melbourne Brain Centre), and Dublin (Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland).

Dr Holodinsky's research focuses on resource utilization and optimization in the emergency department. She is highly skilled in administrative and big data use, complex modeling techniques including machine learning, and health system level research. Dr Holodinsky is an advocate for using data to make change in the healthcare system and profoundly believes that Data Saves Lives.

About the Collection

BMC Emergency Medicine is calling for submissions to our collection, Stroke management.

Stroke management is a critical aspect of emergency medicine, encompassing the timely and effective assessment, intervention, and ongoing care for individuals experiencing cerebrovascular events, including hemorrhagic and ischemic strokes. The field has seen significant advancements in acute stroke care, including the development of thrombolytic therapies, endovascular procedures, and multidisciplinary approaches to stroke management. Understanding the complexities of stroke presentation, risk factors, and treatment options is essential for optimizing patient outcomes and reducing the burden of stroke-related disability and mortality.

It is important for us to continue advancing our collective understanding of stroke management to further enhance the quality and efficiency of emergency care for stroke patients. Recent advances in this area have highlighted the efficacy of time-sensitive interventions such as thrombolysis and endovascular therapy in improving functional outcomes for individuals with acute ischemic stroke. Additionally, research has emphasized the significance of streamlined care pathways and the integration of telemedicine for rapid stroke assessment and treatment decision-making.

We invite submissions from all aspects of this field, including, but not limited to:

Innovations in acute stroke care
Telemedicine in stroke assessment and management
Multidisciplinary approaches to stroke care
Advances in thrombolytic and endovascular therapies
